Canon Rebel XTi DSLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens (OLD MODEL)
[This is the same review I posted for the kit. If you're getting the body because you don't like the 18-55 lens, keep in mind that some dealers offer this camera in a kit with the much nicer 17-85 USM IS (image stabalization) zoom.]

The new Digital Rebel XTi camera should appeal to a wide variety of users: those wishing to upgrade from a point & shoot digital, or those wishing to improve upon their first generation digital SLRs. Features and value make this a 5-star camera, but it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Compared to the previous Digital Rebel XT, important improvements are:

1) 10.1 megapixels. In digital camera circles, this is like saying a car has more horsepower than an older car. While this alone doesn't mean "better" pictures, in reality, combined with other improvements in hardware & software, the results typically are better.;

2) 2.5" LCD panel. This alone has more than one advantage. The obvious first one is that our pictures look larger in review. The second, and for someone approaching 50 (like myself), is that the LCD is now used for all the camera's data (shutter speed, aperture, shots left, etc.). It's much easier to read than the small LCD typically located on the top of the cameras. It might use up the batteries quicker, but, heck, if you can see the info this much easier, then so be it. One complaint, it does not appear that the data rotates when you do verticals (like the Sony Alpha 100).;

3) 9-point AF. The number of points are improved from 7, but the real key here is that it's the system from the 30D, which had a much higher degree of accuracy than the previous Rebels.;

4) Picture Styles.

SLR Camera Sony A3000 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens

I'm not going to bore you with repeating statistics and features many contributors do. I needed this camera for my trip to Germany in the fall, I have two other SONY Cameras the A77 and the A99 which are the full size DSLR's with two pieces of Carl Zeiss glass and lots of toys. Since we will be in Europe for 21 days, weight became an issue.

My full frame and full size SONY's with additional battery holders, and glass were just too big. Great cameras for what I do here in the states. 21 Days, one suitcase, I go light. Besides I have an adapter that allows alpha lenses on the NEX size bodies.

Trudging through castles and churches, Photokina and Octoberfest, I wanted small with interchangeable lenses, the whole kit with the 12mm, 16mm, 18-55, 55-200 weighs less than one unit of the larger size. This type of trip is wide angle country.

Like many folks, I pre-ordered the D800 the same day it was available. Alas, Nikon totally blew the market analysis vs production vs. supply chain formula. After waiting 2 months, I had to leave the country before Nikon got it's D800 act together. I needed a beat-up D90 replacement camera, and the D3200 seemed like a decent place-holder. I quickly ordered one before they were back-ordered too! Sure, the D3200 is DX, not FX. Sure, it is not nearly as flexible. Sure, it can only AF with newer lenses. BUT, you can buy about 4-D3200's for the price of a D800, AND it comes with a decent kit lens for $699!

The tutoring graphical-based menu system is geared more to beginners, which I am not, so I find it maddening. Most will love it, since it is somewhat educational, and offers a great variety of pre-sets to take creative shots easily.

I bought this camera not knowing much about cameras but wanting one that would allow me to expand later. I read the manual and knew I'd be using the auto feature most of the time for now. The manual is concise but efficient for beginners. All my pics taken so far have been with Kodak 400 film and are very clear and crisp. The evening shots I took in Vegas were using the pre-set auto feature for darker environments which came out amazing! The vista shots using the pre-set for background shots of Grand Canyon came out spectacular: wide area covered with great detail. It is light weight enough that I walked around Vegas with this on my neck and the battery is still strong after 5 rolls of film. The styling is very updated with the silver body and the 28-90mm lens covered every possible scenario I was interested in taking. The kit I got included (...) a nice Canon canvas case, camera straps, mini-album and battery. Good value for the price. Considered the Olympus IS-50 also but wanted the option of changine lenses later on.

SLR Camera Canon EOS Rebel T3 Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (discontinued by manufacturer)

Back in the mid 1980s, I purchased a Canon EOS 650 -- one of their first autofocus film cameras -- to use as my high school's yearbook editor and photographer. I absolutely loved the camera; my nephew recently inherited it, and he loves it as well. It took amazing pictures. Offered a plethora of features. And has lasted over 20 years.

However, prior to purchasing the T3, I did my research regarding entry-level DSLR cameras, and had narrowed it down to the Nikon D3100 and the T3. Yes, the Nikon offers higher megapixels. Yes, the Nikon has better HD video modes. However, much wanting an e-reader for the specific purpose of reading books, I wanted a DSLR camera that would take amazing pictures -- not record state-of-the-art video. I have a video camera for that. (As an aside, I've shot some video with the T3, and the quality is fine for stuff like YouTube or personal blogs. If you're a user wanting more than that, I'm unsure why would would be using your DSLR for video in the first place.)

I chose the T3. And could not be happier.

Other things I like about the T3?

1. Canon is known for outstanding image quality. Their CMOS sensor and DIGIC processor combine to produce some of the best (if not _the_ best) images in the industry.

2. Canon lenses -- even the less expensive ones made for "prosumers" (professional consumers who often don't spend more on a lens than the actual camera body itself cost) -- are extremely high quality.

3. Speaking of lenses, great ones are also available from third-party vendors. In fact, I purchased a 50-200 zoom lens from Sigma, and it works perfectly with the T3. It was also quite a bit less expensive than the Canon alternative.

4. Very lightweight.

I loved the size, and feel of this Nikon. The zoom was great, the pictures sharp and the price, very good. And, I liked the Nikon's tilted screen. However, this was my first camera without a viewfinder, and after two weeks, I returned it and ordered the Panasonic Lumix FZ60 - a more expensive camera; but, with viewfinder. I really prefer having the option of having both. The majority of my pictures are nature - birds, flowers, scenery. I had issues with seeing the screen in bright light and it's easier for me the zero in on the subject faster with the viewfinder. It is also easier for me to hold my camera steady when using the viewfinder. The panasonic does not have as long a zoom, but it serves my purpose and cropping the final picture brings my subjects in beautifully. The Panasonic pictures are awesome, it's easy to use and has some great editing features. Bottom line, manufactures are missing the boat by not having more options with optic viewfinders in their comoact models.

 Q: I'm a student filmmaker at an arts high school, and I was wondering if I should get the T5 or the T5i. Any suggestions?
 A: To be honest I have very little experience im just doing it as a hobby, but what I can tell you from my experience with the rebel t5 is that Its beyond great. In my opinion I believe it's up to the photographer to create good quality photos not so much the camera. Whichever one you choose will be fine once you get the hang of it. Also don't think because the cost of a camera is more it's better than the next.
